SAFETY AND HEALTH:
Always follow the best safety practices when using any tools and products.

Thermowood usage is no different, other than the sawdust is substantially finer than that of normal dried wood fibre.

When cutting, planing, routering or sawing any wood product, a dust mask is recommended. Due to the finer dust particulate of thermowood compared to normal wood, this is very important, especially for individuals who may have respiratory illnesses, such as asthma or bronchitis.

Thermowood does not possess any harmful or toxic elements and has no chemical additives, however as with any wood slivers or splinters that may enter the skin, these should be removed immediately, and treated if necessary.

USAGE:
Due to the many potential applications of the thermowood products, it is recommended that the individuals working with this product study the accompanying literature related to the specifics of the product being applied.

In general, our products have varying degrees of hardness qualities. These characteristics vary due to differences in processing temperatures. Our Outdoor and decking products require lower processing temperatures and are much easier to work with. Our Finer woods primarily used in indoor products are processed at much higher temperatures resulting in very low moisture contents and enhanced stability. The resulting products are more brittle in nature and should be handles with extra care to maintain there natural beauty during manufacturing or installation.

NOTES:
The moisture content ranges from 4% to 12% depending on indoor or outdoor product requirements; the molecular structure has been condensed during the process. In some cases this product may lose some of its structural integrity and therefore, thermowood is not approved as of yet for structural purposes.

1. Always check the building codes in your area and be sure to apply for any necessary permits before beginning with any project.

2. Thermowood is not recommended for any project that may have in ground contact unless below surface areas are coated with protection from the earths natural ability to breakdown wood fibers. In areas of termite problems appropriate protection should be applied as well. Speak to your local builder centre for suitable coatings. In ground products encased properly in concrete eliminating in ground contact will be sufficient.

3. Do not nail or screw through knots.

4. Air nailing or screws are recommended, but not required and hammering can cause splitting from contact with the wood. Be sure to adjust the air pressure to be suitable to the application and size of nail. The head of the nail should be flush with the surface of the finished material once imbedded.

5. When using screws, pilot holes are recommended, and never install screws within 1” of the end of a board.

6. Whether choosing nails or screws, always use a product that is relative to the size of the material. (i.e.) do not use oversized spikes to attach finer materials.

7. Stack, or store thermowood products on timbers and avoid contact with the ground. These timbers and spacers should be spaced on 24” centres to eliminate sagging and bowing. Be careful in stacking tongue and groove products to avoid damage to these edges.

8. Clean any sand or debris that may be on wood surface prior to usage to minimize damage to tools.

9. Thermowood waste can be disposed of normally, similar to any other untreated wood product, as no chemicals or additives are present in the product.

10. All wood products are subject to damage over time, due to UV light and various climate conditions. Our products have been thoroughly tested for a variety of finishes that would be best suited for ease of maintenance and longer life of the product. We recommend UV coatings for best protection.

11. The stability of thermowood is superior to that of normally kiln dried products. The high temperature and water vapour process reduces stresses and therefore the risk of warping and twisting once applied. The potential for intake of moisture is reduced significantly compared to other products when properly applied.

12. In addition the durability of thermowood is improved as hemicelluloses such as arabinose, galactose, xylose and mannose have been removed during the process. These are the nutrients the rot causing fungi and bacteria require to grow and survive. This results in higher resistance to most decay.

13. While thoroughly processed thermowood will have a light roasted like odour when freshly sawn or installed, these odours are completely harmless and will diminish over time. These will diminish much sooner when a sealant or UV protectant is applied.

14. The high heat and water vapour process will darken the colour of these products and the degree of colour change is dependent on the heat and length of time at the high heat phase. These colours range from a tan to a dark brown, and colouration permeates through the entire board. Due to this, many people will choose a transparent clear finish to preserve the colour. In outdoor applications, UV light will cause the colour to fade and eventually turn grey unless a UV protectant is applied.
