How it works.

STW’s state-of-the-art EcoDryers utilize intense heat and steam circulated within a highly controlled environment to “dry” wood. Each species is exposed to its own time/temperature formula depending on the qualities desired. As temperatures rise undesired moisture and naturally occurring sugars and resins are drawn out of the wood. This results in a hardened surface quality, a stabilized internal cell structure, a natural barrier to moisture, and a substantial resistance to rot and attack from insects.
The Process:

Raw cut wood (full dimensional lumber) is carefully piled with “stickers” so that air can be effectively circulated throughout the stack. The stack is loaded into the EcoDryer.

The EcoDryer is closed and then sealed. As the hot air passes in and around the stacked wood it begins to “dry”. The moisture, naturally occurring sugars and resins are drawn out of the wood.

Water is injected into the hot air stream to create steam. The steam assists the heating process while moderating the heat to avoid “hot spots”. The heat cycle is controlled remotely by sensors on the stack. The process is continuously monitored from the computer room.

To achieve THERMOWOOD status the wood must reach temperatures of 190 degrees C to 212 degrees C. This temperature is maintained for a minimum of three hours.
Once the desired temperatures are achieved the cooling process begins. This is done in an equally controlled manner so that the wood is not exposed to environmental fluctuations that could result in inconsistencies.

Once the wood is cooled the EcoDryer is opened and the stack is shipped to the mill for cutting, processing and finishing as sawn lumber, trim, molding or flooring.
